We never meant to brag, but we got them where we want them now. Just a few weeks after Paramore worried fans over their rumored breakup, the Grammy Award-winning American rock band is set to join A24’s restoration of the Jonathan Demme-directed concert film, Stop Making Sense.

A24 and Paramore both took to social media to share the teaser clip, previewing Paramore’s cover of Talking Heads’ hit song “Burning Down the House.” The tribute album will pay homage to the 1970s rock band and will feature 16 musical artists covering the setlist from the said 1984 live album. 

In the teaser clip, Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams opens a box that contains a replica of David Byrne’s jacket from the original album’s artwork. Directed by AJ Gibboney and Paramore drummer Zac Farro, the 4K restoration of Stop Making Sense is part of A24’s commemoration of the iconic rock band’s 40th anniversary. 

The concert film featured Talking Heads’ core band members Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison. A24 previously acquired the rights to re-release the acclaimed concert film in theaters and has earned a total of $640,839, according to Variety. 

No release date has been set yet for the Stop Making Sense tribute album. You can watch the teaser clip below:

Is Paramore breaking up?

In December last year, concert cancellations and the disappearance of the band’s website and social media accounts led fans to worry about the groups future. Fortunately, all of the worries turned out to be unfounded, as Variety previously reported that the band is now a free agent. 

Paramore debuted in 2005 with their debut studio album All We Know Is Falling. The band went on to release career-defining albums and has produced several hit tracks, including “That’s What You Get,” “Ignorance,” “Brick by Boring Brick,” “Ain’t It Fun,” “Hate To See Your Heart Break,” and “Rose-Colored Boy,” to mention a few. 

The band’s sixth studio album, This Is Why, was released in February 2023. Paramore currently consists of Williams, Farro, and Taylor York.

Netflix has dropped The Greatest Night in Pop trailer for its newest documentary movie, which chronicles the behind-the-scene story of the iconic 1985 song “We are the World.” The film will have its world premiere at 2024 Sundance Film Festibak.

The video teases how writers Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson and producers Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian were able to gather the brightest stars of the music industry for one night. It will feature interviews with the music video’s musicians, engineers, and production crew as they reminisce about one of the most storied nights in music history.

What to expect in The Greatest Night in Pop?

“In January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history,” reads the synopsis. “The Greatest Night in Pop chronicles the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a world before cell phones and email. That group of artists — led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century — Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — came from different worlds but united to record ‘We Are the World.’ Featuring never-before-seen footage, the film details the early planning stages, including the writing sessions with Richie and Jackson, and goes inside the famed Henson Studios where “We Are the World” was recorded.”

The Greatest Night in Pop is directed by Bao Nguyen and produced by Julia Nottingham, the team behind the acclaimed Bruce Lee documentary (Be Water). Executive producers are Angus Wall, Amit Dey, and Becky Read. It is produced by Richie, Julia Nottingham, Bruce Eskowitz, Larry Klein, Harriet Sternberg, and George Hencken.

For me it was clear that it should be a classic score with strings and piano—the recordings with the London Contemporary Orchestra went very well.”

The film starring Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, and Johnny Flynn is now in theaters.

The mysterious Blumhouse supernatural horror Night Swim is still a couple of weeks away, but its director has urged viewers to look out for an Easter Egg in the film’s early moments that may set up a potential sequel.

Night Swim Sequel Opportunity Bubbles Up

Bryce McGuire, who first created the story of Night Swim as a short in 2014. spoke with SFX magazine where he promised the story will hold deeper secrets that may not all become clear in the span of the film, and even though he’s cautious about the film’s success, he has made sure there are green shoots for future entries.

“There’s a little Easter egg in one of the early scenes that, to me, points a path to where I’d like to go. It would be fun to explore and expand the mythology.”

Certainly better than full-on teasing of a sequel that might never be in an end-credits stinger, and hopefully part of a richer mystery overall.

Starring Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Ray Waller, the rest of the Night Swim cast includes Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) as Eve, Amélie Hoeferle (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) as Izzy, and Gavin Warren (Fear the Walking Dead) as Elliot. 

The forthcoming horror film is executive produced by Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Ryan Turek, with Wan and Jason Blum serving as producers. 

Based on the 2014 short film by McGuire and Rod Blackhurst, the official synopsis for Night Swim reads:  “In the film, Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve, teenage daughter Izzy, and young son Elliot. Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.”

Night Swim is out in theaters on January 5, 2024.

Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie both have some thoughts about the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

Speaking with one another on Variety’s Actors on Actors, per a clip posted to Twitter by DiscussingFilm, Murphy and Robbie both reflected on how Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie played off one another when both films released in the United States on July 21, 2023.

“It was incredible [the hype around Barbenheimer, and it was self-generated, you know what I mean?” Murphy said.

“People kept asking me if the studios’ marketing departments are talking to each other,” Robbie added. “I was like, ‘No. This is the world doing this. This is not a part of the marketing campaign. This is just happening.’”

Murphy continued, “I think it happened because both movies were good. That’s the thing. There was sort of a diversity offered by both movies. In fact, that summer, there was a huge diversity of stuff in the cinema and, like, I think it just connected in a way that you, I, the studios, or anybody could never have predicted.”

How big of a hit at the box office were Barbie and Oppenheimer?

Murphy played J. Robert Oppenheimer in Nolan’s film, which also starred Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, and more. Oppenheimer made $953.2 million at the global box office off of a budget of $100 million. 

Robbie, meanwhile, played the titular character in Gerwig’s Barbie, which she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. Also starring Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, and Issa Rae, Barbie made $1.422 billion at the global box office off an estimated budget of $128-145 million.

Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are currently available to purchase on digital platforms such as Amazon, AppleTV+, and more. They are also both available to purchase on physical media.

Epic Games has announced its next big event in Fortnite will take place next month with promises of massive changes to the game, and it seems rapper Eminem will kick it off in the Chapter 4 finale Live Event.

Slim Shady Has Skin in the Game

Fortnite: The Big Bang is set to take place on December 2, 2023. 2 PM ET to usher in Chapter 5 after a short throwback season that saw the original map return. The chapter-ending events usually signify a significant change to the game’s world, but this time, it is expected it will be an even more significant overhaul as the game enters its 5th year.

Leaks aplenty have gone around about what’s new for Chapter 5 and what the Big Bang Event might entail. Eminem’s involvement looks fairly certain at this point, but it’s not known in what capacity that might be. A concert? Maybe. A skin? Almost definitely as some leaked images such as the one below have shown. But a leaked loading screen for the event is also among the evidence Slim Shady will play a part in The Big Bang.

A Lego collaboration is one of the rumored additions for Chapter 5, with the official Lego account posting a little Lego Loot Llama. It can also be seen in the teaser image alongside musical instruments and a giant rubber duck.

According to the concert film’s synopsis, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé highlights the tour’s journey, “from its inception, to the opening in Stockholm, Sweden, to the finale in Kansas City, Missouri.” It is described as a concert film about the singer’s hard work and involvement during the production.

During a recent appearance at the CUNY Graduate Center, Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan addressed the impact of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour concert movie. He praised the global pop star for her decision to skip studios and directly partner with AMC theaters for the concert film’s theatrical distribution.

“Taylor Swift is about to show the studios, because her concert film is not being distributed by the studios,” Nolan said. “It’s being distributed by the theater owner, AMC, and it’s going to make an enormous amount of money. And this is the thing, this is a format, this is a way of seeing things and sharing stories, or sharing experiences that’s incredibly valuable. And if they [the studios] don’t want it, somebody else will. So that’s just the truth of it.”

Since its release last October 13, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie has currently garnered a worldwide gross of over $123 million at the box office. Max has released the Taking on Taylor Swift trailer for CNN FlashDocs’ upcoming documentary, centering around the 2017 copyright lawsuit filed against the global popstar for her chart-topping song “Shake It Off” from 2014. The documentary will start streaming on Max on October 20.

The video highlights the lawsuit filed by songwriters Sean Hall and Nathan Butler. The songwriting duo claimed that the lyrics “Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play…And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate,” from the beginning of Swift’s “Shake If Off” chorus was allegedly plagiarized from their 2001 song “Playas Gon’ Play,” which was performed by the former girl group 3LW. Their lawsuit took five years in court before it was dropped without receiving its final verdict.

The documentary explores creativity, credit, and the hazy line between cultural appreciation and appropriation. It is produced by the CNN FlashDocs unit, with Eric Johnson and Emily Taguchi serving as an executive producer and supervising producer, respectively.

Britney Spears‘ upcoming memoir The Woman in Me details an instance where the pop icon says she became pregnant while dating Justin Timberlake and subsequently had an abortion.

The news comes ahead of the memoir’s release on October 24, 2023, and notes (via People) that Spears was shocked by the news, but wasn’t something she was upset about due to her love for the pop star.

Spears notes Timberlake was not ready to be a father

However, Spears goes on to say that Timberlake “didn’t want to be a father” and thought they were too young, leading to the abortion.

“It was a surprise, but for me, it wasn’t a tragedy. I loved Justin so much I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” Spears writes in the book. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

“If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father,” writes Spears. “To this day, it’s one of the most agonizing things I have ever experienced in my life.”

Spears and Timberlake began dating in 1999 and quickly became one of the most famous couples of the time. In 2002, the pair abruptly broke up. Timberlake then released the single “Cry Me a River,” which led to massive rumors that Spears had cheated on him at some point in their relationship. In response, Spears wrote and released the song “Everytime” in 2003.

Prime Video has officially announced the release date for the streaming debut of BTS: Yet to Come, the newest concert movie from the K-Pop boy band phenomenon.

The film had its theatrical release earlier this year in February, where it earned a worldwide gross of over $29 million at the box office. It will start streaming on November 9 on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

What is BTS: Yet to Come?

BTS: Yet to Come is the filmed version of the seven-member group’s latest concert in Busan, South Korea, which took place in October 2022 at the Asiad Main Stadium. The concert was attended by approximately over 50,000 people. Produced by HYBE, CJ 4DPlex, and Trafalgar Releasing, the film will feature 19 performances of their hit tracks, such as “Dynamite,” “Butter,” “RUN,” “MIC Drop,” “Yet To Come (The Most Beautiful Moment),” and more.

“We are thrilled to partner with HYBE in welcoming BTS: Yet to Come to Prime Video,” director of Prime Video Southeast Asia, David Simonsen said in a statement. “We know the popularity of high-quality Korean content worldwide and we look forward to delighting consumers around the globe with BTS: Yet to Come. We are excited to see the concert movie and this genre find new audiences from different countries on Prime Video.”

The concert also served as the group’s last concert as a full group before each of them begin their respective mandatory two-year military service. At the moment, three out of the seven members including Jin, J-Hope, and Suga have already enlisted. As for RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, they will first complete each of their solo promotions before going to the military just like what the first three had previously done. The members are expected to make a full group comeback in 2025 after all of them have completed their military service.

There’s something quite exquisite about the marriage of music and movies.

Ever since The Jazz Singer made it a mainstream combination to be feared, the musical has been a sublime stalwart of cinema that is primarily dominated by the likes of Gene Kelly (and with good reason, that man was a don of dance).

Now mix in a little (or a lot) horror, and things get interesting. There aren’t many horror musicals, but what is about contains plenty of good ones. So here you are, an article highlighting some of the finest examples of Halloween harmonies and tunes of terror.

Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Frank Oz directs this film adaptation of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken’s musical take on Roger Corman’s original 1960 movie, giving it a demented edge to its catchy rock opera.

Seymour Krelborn (Rick Moranis) works at a plant shop where he pines over his abused co-worker Audrey (Ellen Greene). The chance discovery of a strange new plant changes the fortunes of Seymour, Audrey, and the plant shop, but the strange little plant grows a big appetite for humans.

From the off, there are incredibly catchy numbers of all shapes and sizes. As far as the cast is concerned, the undisputed King of Little Shop of Horrors is Steve Martin‘s turn as a sadistic motorcycle-riding dentist.

Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

Brian De Palma has made some of the most intense thrillers and horror movies in his storied career. But when he took a stab at making a musical that modernizes The Phantom of the Opera, he showed just how flexible a director he was.

The range of musical styles featured in this dazzling yet cynical take on the music industry is incredibly varied, from 50s-style rock to heartfelt piano ballads and Beach Boys-style pop songs. Phantom of the Paradise runs the gamut as poor old Winslow is subjected to all kinds of torment at the hands of slimy music guru Swan, played by musician Paul Williams.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a horror musical phenomenon only matched by one other movie on this list. It’s designed from the ground up to be an audiovisual spectacle, as well as a delightfully camp extravaganza.

It helps that it has the strait-laced Brad and Janet (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) coming up against the lurid and creepy duo of Tim Curry’s Doctor Frank-N-Furter and Richard O’Brien’s Riff Raff. The chalk and cheese dynamic soon melts away until all are pure goopy horny cheddar.

Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)

I’m such a fan of this teeny sub-genre because it gives the movies a life long after you watch them. The soundtracks are earworms that ensure you will return with a renewed fondness. Anna and the Apocalypse is perhaps my favorite example of that.

There is no soundtrack I have had on repeat more in the past five years than the one to John McPhail’s twisted high school musical. The film’s oddly accurate look at life in a UK school is a surprise, but the set piece song and dance numbers tap into all kinds of emotions. From the Innuendo-laden It’s That Time of Year, the oblivious joy of Turning My Life Around to the pain and sadness of I Will Believe, this festive zombie movie deserves to be in the same company as our next entry.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

The spooky giant that can exist in two seasonal periods. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a movie that deserves respect for how much cultural impact it has managed to have as a celebration of both Halloween and Christmas.

It’s a pretty loose story that probably doesn’t earn its iconic central romance, but I suppose it’s a case of ”who cares?” That absolutely majestic soundtrack and arresting stop-motion animation do the heavy lifting. Plus, it gave us that Blink-182 line!

The Happiness of the Katakuris (2001)

I really like Takashi Miike. He makes oddball violent nonsense as Ichi the Killer one minute, then makes something as chilling and poignant as Audition the next. Much like De Palma, doing a musical feels like a barmy choice but ends up making some strange sense.

The Happiness of the Katakuris is less about being a set of catchy tunes and choreography than most entries on this list. However, it’s such a deliciously odd and dark musical experience that could only come from someone as eccentric as Miike.

Disney Channel alum Ross Lynch — who played Austin Moon in the comedy series Austin & Ally — teamed up with Australian singer Troye Sivan in an upcoming music video titled “One of Your Girls.”

The music video, which will drop on October 13, is part of the singer’s third studio album, “Something To Give Each Other.” The video will be the third single off of the singer’s album, following the releases of “Rush” and “Got Me Started.”

What Is “One of Your Girls” About?

The 16-second promotional clip teases Sivan singing to the shirtless Lynch. While the full lyrics are yet to be revealed until the video drops on Friday, the snippet teases that the music may chronicle the tale of a gay man who is in love with a straight guy. “Give me a call if you ever get desperate,” Sivan sings. “I’ll be like one of your girls.”

In an interview with The Guardian, Sivan — who also has few acting credits under his belt, including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Boy Erased, and The Idol — shared that “One of Your Girls” circles back to his experiences “with guys who had not previously been with guys and were showing [him] interest.”

“It probably comes from childhood [feelings] of not feeling like enough, and then seeing these guys that I’m like, ‘I don’t know if I want to be you or be with you, but I’m completely ‘hearteyes’ for you,’” he added. “I found that a lot of the time after these experiences, I’d be kind of selling myself short or allowing myself to be the secret. It’s a bit self-deprecating.”

Of course, fans are already gushing over the upcoming music video, with one person saying “Ross Lynch serving c-nt in a Troye Sivan music video is my superbowl.”

Another X user wrote, “Ross Lynch in Troye Sivan’s music video, call that austin and ALLY.”

Lynch has appeared in various films and movies since his stint in the Disney series, including My Friend Dahmer as the young Jeffrey Dahmer and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina as Harvey Kinkle. He is also a member of The Driver Era, an indie-alt rock band he formed alongside his brother Rocky Lynch. Both of them are former members of the now-disbanded R5.

It’s one thing to be recognized for your directing work over the years by creating a slew of genre classics, but it’s on a whole other level to also manage to create stellar soundtracks for them as well. John Carpenter has done precisely that in countless movies over the years.

There’s a lot of them to pick from, and Carpenter’s more comprehensive library of music beyond film is also worth digging into. Still — for the here and now — we’re delving into the most significant examples of John Carpenter’s movie composing in a second career that has spanned decades.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

Carpenter’s third stab at composing was his first strong effort. Assault on Precinct 13’s mean synthy beats make this dirty 70s cop movie retelling of Rio Bravo feel as grimy and dangerous as the situation the motley crew of a cast find themselves in.

When you look at the evolution of the Carpenter soundtrack in the years after this, Assault on Precinct 13’s score feels just as raw and dirty as the movie it accompanies.

Halloween (1978)

The quintessential John Carpenter soundtrack for the quintessential John Carpenter movie. Halloween was a massive moment in Carpenter’s career, and even when he’s been disinterested in directing sequels and reboots of his iconic slasher, he’s often returned to blend new variants of his original score for them.

How Carpenter morphs his titular theme to suit the various stages of action in the movie is impressive. This musical masterpiece burrows deeper into the blood and tissue of that one night in Haddonfield.

The Fog (1980)

It’s no coincidence that Carpenter’s stellar run of films from the 1970s and 80s coincides with some of his most iconic composing work. The Fog had the tough job of following up Halloween on both fronts, but it did an admirable job all around.

The score is perfect for a ghost story set in a coastal Californian town. Its haunting, twinkly overtone brings an almost jovially spooky feel, while the longer lower moments add a sense of foreboding to proceedings. The audiovisual pairing means you can almost taste the salt in the air. Mind you, I did just eat some chips listening to it again.

Escape From New York (1981)

As Carpenter grew more flexible in his composing, the results became wildly different without sacrificing his signature style. Few examples are as pointed as the score for Escape from New York.

The mood pieces for the prison island of New York are a highlight. Perhaps it’s no coincidence the quality and variety are amplified when you consider this and Halloween II marked the start of collaboration with Alan Howarth.

Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (1982)

Carpenter may have left the Halloween franchise to others once he made the first film, but he kept composing new soundtracks for its early sequels. Perhaps fittingly for the film, his work on Halloween 3: Season of the Witch is underappreciated.

It features one of the greatest tracks Carpenter has ever composed with Chariots of Pumpkins, and came during this fruitful period where he collaborated with Alan Howarth.

Prince of Darkness (1987)

Pound for pound, Prince of Darkness has the best soundtrack for a John Carpenter movie by the man himself. It’s a dread-inducing dreamscape — a doom-laden orchestra for the end of the world.

The movie’s story has an apocalyptic nature, with a simple, yet impossible cylinder acting as the catalyst for increasingly terrible events. Carpenter and Howarth subtly escalate the despair and dread through the score as the influence of the cylinder’s contents.

They Live (1988)

The last of Carpenter’s collaborations with Alan Howarth is a fine way to end the partnership. They Live’s Western-tinged opening theme is reminiscent of Carpenter’s Assault on Precinct 13 score, and this tale of hidden corruption and invasion is backed beautifully by synths, mournful harmonica calls, and bluesy riffs.

The standout track for me is All Out of Bubble Gum, which gets these audio ideals firing on all cylinders with accompanying looping finger snaps. And the name alone just puts you right into that iconic scene, doesn’t it?

Ghosts of Mars (2001)

Ghosts of Mars isn’t considered one of Carpenter’s best movies (but it’s better than you think), but the soundtrack is definitely one of his best. A metal-infused swagger that encapsulates a particularly grimy period for heavy rock.

In many ways, it ends up being a progenitor of Mick Gordon’s score for the video game Doom. It gets its metal core from a collaboration with the band Anthrax, and however you might feel about Carpenter’s penultimate movie, he absolutely delivered on the soundtrack front.

Halloween (2018)

After many many years away from the franchise (and scoring in general,) John Carpenter returned to compose David Gordon Green’s modern Halloween trilogy with assistance from Daniel Davies and Cody Carpenter, John’s musician son.

Carpenter has collaborated with this team of musicians the most in recent years, even touring with them a few years back for the release of John Carpenter’s Anthology. They collectively freshen up an all-time classic score and add new layers and whole new tracks. Honestly, any of the three scores would deserve a spot here, but I still have such fondness for the 2018 film as a herald of Carpenter’s return to the franchise.

Are you ready for it? Swifties around the world will get a chance to experience Taylor Swift’s phenomenal The Eras Tour in their home countries starting October 13. The singer-songwriter’s upcoming concert film, titled Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, will be rolling out in theaters across more than 100 countries.

The award-winning artist previously announced that the 2-hour and 45-minute concert film will be released in North American theaters. Now, with AMC handling international distribution of the taped concert movie, the tickets for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour — available for purchase via the concert film’s official website — will go on sale beginning September 26.

“The tour isn’t the only thing we’re taking worldwide,” the “Anti-Hero” hitmaker wrote on Instagram. “Been so excited to tell you all that The Eras Tour concert film is now officially coming to theaters [Worldwide] on [October] 13!”

Taylor Swift Continues to Dominate the Music Industry

According to Swift, her recent world tour — which began in March in Glendale, Arizona — has been the most “meaningful” experience of her life thus far. As the tour continues through 2024, she will make stops in places like Japan, Australia, and Europe before returning to North America.

Meanwhile, Swift will release the “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” album on October 27. Currently, the singer has already re-released three out of her six previous albums, with “Fearless (Taylor’s Version),” “Red (Taylor’s Version),” and “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” coming first.

Moreover, the singer’s 2017 song “Look What You Made Me Do” recently received the “Taylor’s Version” treatment through a snippet from the trailer of Prime Video’s upcoming psychological thriller series, Wilderness.
