The Shining mini-series heads to Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory in March. Mick Garris (Sleepwalkers, The Stand, Critters 2) directed the adaptation of Stephen King‘s story.

The Shining Mini-Series Details

After a much-publicized distaste for Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, Stephen King provided the teleplay for this 1997 mini-series that stars Rebecca De Mornay and Steven Weber as Wendy and Jack Torrance.

As with the original story, Jack and Wendy Torrance along with their son Danny go to live and work in the Overlook Hotel during the off-season. Unfortunately, the hotel has many ghosts from its past that prey on the family. Danny’s struggles with his fledgling power known as Shining appears to only make the situation worse.

While it has its fans who enjoyed how close it sticks to the book in the early going, many criticized the mini-series for its overly sentimental ending and often cheap look. It was one of many Stephen King mini-series during the 1990s.

Kubrick’s film received something of a spiritual follow up in Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep. That film balanced the best of both worlds as it kept the tone of King’s stories as we follow an adult Danny Torrance acting as mentor to Abra, a young girl with a powerful form of the Shining.

Peacock has officially granted a straight-to-series order to Nahnatchka Khan and Sally Bradford McKenna’s upcoming comedy series Laid.

After her breakthrough performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Oscar nominee Stephanie Hsu has signed on for the leading role in the series. This marks Hsu’s first major TV project as the solo lead, following her recurring roles in shows like The Path, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Awkwafina is Nora from Queens.

What to expect in Laid?

“A woman finds out her former lovers are dying in unusual ways and must go back through her sex timeline to confront her past in order to move forward – LAID is a f**cked up rom-com where the answer to ‘Why can’t I find love, is there something wrong with me?’ is a resounding ‘Yes. There is. The problem is definitely you,'” reads the logline.

Laid is written and executive produced by Khan (Fresh Off the Boat, Totally Killer) and McKenna (The Goldbergs) who previously collaborated together on 2012’s Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23. The project will be based on the Australian series of the same name which hailed from Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher.

In addition to starring, Hsu will also be taking on an executive producing role alongside John Davis, John Fox, Jennifer Carreras, Hardy, Fisher, and Liz Watts. It hails from Universal Television and All3Media International.

AMC Networks has unveiled the trailer for the Giancarlo Esposito-led crime thriller Parish. Set to hit AMC and AMC+ this March, the teaser trailer has so far promised an action-packed thriller from the Breaking Bad actor. 

In the newly released video titled “Our Father, Who Art in Heaven…,” Esposito’s character is seen praying after an unfortunate series of events led him to completely lose control over his own life. 

“Lead us not into temptation, and deliver us from evil,” Esposito says in the trailer. 

In addition to starring in the upcoming series, the award-winning actor also served as Parish’s executive producer alongside Danny Brocklehurst, Jim Poyser, Jolyon Symonds, David Morrissey, Josh Kesselman, Danny Sherman, Barry Jossen, Tana Jamieson, Theo Travers, and Nicola Shindler.

What is Parish about?

The six-episode crime thriller is based on Brocklehurst and Poyser’s hit UK series The Driver. Hailing from showrunners Eduardo Javier Canto and Ryan Maldonado, Parish follows the titular character, Gracian Parish, who will soon find himself in a perilous situation involving a criminal syndicate. 

The synopsis for Parish reads: “In the series, Esposito stars as Gracian “Gray” Parish, a family man and proud owner of a luxury car service in New Orleans. After his son is violently murdered and his business collapses, an encounter with an old friend from his days as a wheelman resurfaces old habits, sending Gray on a high-stakes collision course with a violent criminal syndicate.”

Who else is involved in Parish?

Apart from Esposito, Parish boasts an impressive cast with Doctor Sleep actor Zackary Momoh starring as Zimbabwean gangster The Horse. Paula Malcomson (The Hunger Games) will also star in the forthcoming series as Gray’s wife Rose. 

The rest of the cast includes Scream’s Skeet Ulrich as Colin, Wallander’s Bonnie Mbuli as Shamiso Tongai, Hawkeye’s Ivan Mbakop as Zenzo, Chicago Fire’s Dax Rey as Luke, and Black-ish’s Arica Himmel as Gray and Rose’s daughter Makayla. 

The West Wing’s Bradley Whitford will also star in the series in a recurring role. He will reportedly portray Anton. Moreover, Orphan Black actress Amanda Brugel will guest star in the series as Sister Anne.

Stranger Things star Eduardo Franco, who played Argyle in Season 4, has said that he won’t be returning for the final season of the acclaimed Netflix drama series.

In an interview with the Steve Varley Show, Franco was asked about his absence in the recently released cast photo for Season 5. The actor revealed that he simply wasn’t called back for the final season and doesn’t appear in the upcoming episodes.

“It’s nice to hear that there’s some sort of concern or something, you know what I mean,” Franco answered. “But I never got a phone call, so I think … yeah, I think that’s it.”

Max has released the first Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 12 trailer, providing the first look at the final season of Larry David’s iconic comedy series.

The new trailer features David doling out his unique wisdom and aggravating others, including Susie Essman’s Susie Greene, Cheryl Hines, Ted Danson, Vince Vaughn, Sean Hayes, Dan Levy, and more. The twelfth and final season is set to debut on Max Sunday, February 4.

“Starring Larry David as an over-the-top version of himself, the iconic Emmy and Golden Globe-winning comedy series Curb Your Enthusiasm offers a tongue-in-cheek depiction of the writer/producer/comedian’s fictionalized life,” reads Season 12’s logline. “The comedy series continues to prove how seemingly trivial details of one’s day-to-day life can precipitate a catastrophic chain of events. How long has Curb Your Enthusiasm been running?

Originally released in 2000, Curb Your Enthusiasm was created by Larry David (Seinfeld), who stars in the series as a semi-fictionalized version of himself. The series has been critically praised from its inception and has been nominated for 51 Emmy Awards in total.

The series originally aired for eight seasons and ended in 2011 before picking back up again in 2017 for a ninth season. The 10th season released in 2020, which was followed by the 11th in 2021.

According to Deadline, Max has opted to not renew its Julia Child-centered comedy drama series for a third season. The cancellation comes after less than a month since Julia Season 2 had concluded its 8-episode run.

It’s been a big week for The Last of Us Season 2, as yet another character — Dina — has been cast for the next season of the HBO video game adaptation.

Variety has reported that Isabela Merced will be playing Dina in The Last of Us’ second season. This is another major project for Merced, who has starred in Dora and the Lost City of Gold and Migration and is in this year’s Madame Web and Alien: Romulus. Introduced in The Last of Us Part II (where she was played by Shannon Woodward), Dina lives on the Jackson settlement alongside Ellie at the beginning of the game and is Ellie’s romantic partner throughout.

“Dina is warm, brilliant, wild, funny, moral, dangerous and instantly lovable,” series co-creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin stated. “You can search forever for an actor who effortlessly embodies all of those things, or you can find Isabela Merced right away. We couldn’t be prouder to have her join our family.”

Earlier this week, the characters of Jesse and Abby were also cast for the new season.

The series is executive produced and co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and original game writer Neil Druckmann, who is also serving as one of the directors. It is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. Executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog President Evan Wells, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

Prime Video has uploaded a new Mr. & Mrs. Smith trailer for the explosive new series led by Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. The first season is set to debut on the streaming platform on February 2, 2024.

The trailer shows Glover and Erskine’s characters as they manage their work-arranged marriage with their dangerous lifestyle, which includes them trying to dispose of a body in a bathtub.

“Two lonely strangers land a job working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels and a dream brownstone in Manhattan,” reads the series‘ synopsis. “The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. & Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Úrsula Corberó is no stranger to heists. The Spanish actress is one of the stars of Lift, an upcoming action comedy film from Netflix about a heist on a plane. Before Lift, Corberó was best known for her role as Tokyo on the popular Netflix series Money Heist.

According to Corberó, the only similarity between the two projects is that both revolve around a heist. Aside from the robberies, Corberó explained in an interview how Lift and Money Heist differ in style, tone, and presentation.

“Even though it’s a heist, it’s very different from Money Heist. Money Heist has this dark vibe. This is more just to have fun and it’s for all audiences,” Corberó said to GamesRadar+. “When I read the script, I remember I could feel the fast pace and it’s a different character, it’s a different vibe, it’s a different mood. It’s a different genre . . . I took care of the very different look for her, and I was very happy with the result.”

What to Expect in Lift?

Kevin Hart headlines Lift as Cyrus Whitaker, a professional thief who attempts the impossible: stealing millions of gold from a moving plane. Lift’s ensemble includes Corberó, Vincent D’Onofrio, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Billy Magnussen, Jacob Batalon, Jean Reno, and Sam Worthington.

The official synopsis reads: “A professional thief and his expert crew attempt the ultimate heist: stealing $500 million in gold from a vault on a plane — 40,000 feet in the air.”

Lift is directed by F. Gary Gray from a screenplay by Daniel Kunka. Producers include Hart, Brian Smiley, Matt Reeves, Adam Kassan, Simon Kinberg, and Audrey Chon.

Just over a week after the second season of What If…? concluded on Disney+, we have yet another installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the streamer. Echo is the latest MCU miniseries on Disney+, proudly boasting a brand new Marvel Spotlight banner during the opening logos meant to symbolize how this is a more grounded, character-driven story that does not rely on preexisting knowledge of the larger MCU continuity. I don’t know how true that is since this show is a spin-off of Hawkeye with a villain famously introduced in Daredevil. However, Echo was a delightful watch that explored Maya Lopez and her Native American heritage despite having a few flaws that held it back from meeting its full potential.

There were green flags all over this project. Echo is the first Disney+ MCU show to go for a TV-MA rating, which signaled that this would be a more mature outing for the franchise that has largely thrived in PG-13/TV-14 territory. Having seen the show, I can’t say that it is fully committed to adult content there is little to no language, and the bloodiest moments are in the trailers. Regardless, this show explores a lot of uncharted territory for the MCU. Recent MCU projects have been unafraid to capture minority voices and put them in their popular franchise. The filmmakers behind Echo collaborated with members of the Choctaw Nation to represent them properly in this show.

Ultimately, it works well as the show follows Maya Lopez, portrayed by Alaqua Cox. The first episode shows her character’s emotional backstory, starting with her childhood, tragedies surrounding her parents, and ultimately being taken in by Wilson Fisk/Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). The show recaps a bit of what we saw from the two of them in Hawkeye when Maya shot Fisk in the eye for killing her father. But if you’ve seen the trailers, you know that Fisk comes back in this show. There’s a layered, complex relationship between the hero and the villain of this show, especially because it isn’t exactly easy to call Maya a hero.

Maya grew up training under Kingpin. Violence was her answer to everything. One of the best scenes in the entire show occurs in the first episode when Maya finds herself in a brawl with several goons and a very good lawyer. The fight choreography and camerawork is outstanding during this whole sequence. Much of the action set piece is filmed to appear as if it is one take, and it gives a grittier type of action than we’re used to seeing in the MCU. Marvel action is typically fun, exciting, and sanitized, but fans of movies like The Raid will have a great time with the stonework, especially in the first and third episodes.

Another shining element of the show is Cox’s portrayal of Maya. It appears as if she is doing many of the stunts herself, which is impressive for any actor to do, but when you factor in that she is an amputee with a prosthetic leg, that is beyond incredible. Like her character, Cox is deaf. Therefore, Maya does not have any spoken dialogue in the entire show. She speaks American Sign Language (ASL), and this is another wonderful feat. She doesn’t use spoken dialogue to communicate her emotions the way other actors do. Everything she communicates is through facial expressions and the physicality of her signing, which makes this performance captivating to watch.

It can be even more challenging when you take into account that Maya is a stoic character. Trained to be an assassin from a young age, she has a rough exterior. But Echo explores her relationships with her family that tear her walls down. One particular scene between Maya and her grandmother Chula (Tantoo Cardinal) is a beautifully tragic moment where you get a sense of how troubled their history is. The supporting cast is all giving phenomenal work too. D’Onofrio has consistently portrayed a terrifying villain with Kingpin for years, and he delivers again in this show.

Echo makes full use of its style. There are moments in the show where sign language becomes integral to the communication of a scene. There is a strong soundtrack here, with needle drops placed at the right moments. Most of the episodes are directed by Sydney Freeland, who does a superb job of helming the action and the more emotional beats. The only action sequence that did not work for me was a scene set on a moving train in the second episode that had great stunt work and ideas on paper but wasn’t lit brightly enough to see clearly. One of the better ideas in the show is the decision to begin three of the episodes with backstory on Native Americans, offering a fresh perspective that pays off in the finale.

By the time the finale rolls around, Echo leaves you on a decently satisfied note. My biggest gripe is that the show should have been longer than five episodes because there’s so much world-building and so much story to tell here and it doesn’t get to all of it. The show establishes what could have been a very emotional relationship between Maya and her cousin Bonnie (Devery Jacobs), but it does not feel like that storyline came to its maximum fruition. The finale has a lot of setup, but the actual climax only lasts around 10 minutes. It’s a shame that the best action sequence in the show happens in the first episode, with the finale being underwhelming in comparison. Echo is not as great as it could have been, but it’s a solid show with a strong vision behind it.

SCORE: 7/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 7 equates to “Good.” A successful piece of entertainment that is worth checking out, but it may not appeal to everyone.

Tompkins (BoJack Horseman)as Professor Hirsute, Jackee Harry (Sister Sister) as Jackee the Ripper, Hannah Simone (New Girl) as Lady Godiva, Richard Kind (Big Mouth) as Nostradamus.

Further details about Season 2’s plot are still being kept under wraps.

Who’s involved in the Clone High revival?

The Clone High revival hails from original creators Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are executive producing and voicing the respective roles of Scudworth and JFK. Season 2 will also feature returning voice cast members Will Forte as Abe, Nicole Sullivan as Joan, Donald Faison as George Washington Carver, Christa Miller as Candide Sampson and Judah Miller as Scangrade.

The first installment also included the voices of Ayo Edebiri as Harriet; Mitra Jouhari as Cleo; Vicci Martinez as Frida; Kelvin Yu as Confucius; Neil Casey as Topher Bus and more.

“Clone High is set at a high school for clones of historical figures,” reads the synopsis. “After a high school that was secretly being run as an elaborate military experiment to clone the greatest minds in history was put on ice, the clones have been thawed out 20 years later to resume the experiment with new clone classmates – all while navigating a new set of cultural norms and overly dramatic teen relationships.”

Season 1 is available for streaming on Max.

Following the announcement of Veep alum Reid Scott joining Law & Order Season 23 as the newest series regular, TVLine has shared a first-look at the actor’s role as the new NYPD detective. 

The actor will reportedly portray Detective Vincent Riley, a character Camryn Manheim’s Lieutenant Kate Dixon recruited. Scott will be succeeding Jeffrey Donovan’s Detective Frank Cosgrove, who left the show due to “creative differences.” Donovan appeared in Seasons 21 and 22 of the NBC police procedural drama. 

Before Donovan joined the series as Detective Frank, Anthony Anderson reprised his role as Detective Kevin Bernard, leaving after Season 21. Mehcad Brooks succeeded him as Jalen Shaw in Season 22.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Law & Order are available to purchase on Prime Video, with Seasons 13 to 20 streaming on Peacock. On the other hand, the latest seasons — Seasons 21 and 22 — are available to purchase on Apple TV or Prime Video.

Apple TV+ has released the full Masters of the Air opening title sequence for its highly-anticipated World War II drama. The series hails from Band of Brothers and The Pacific executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

The two-minute long video shows a montage of its all-star cast led by Oscar nominees Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan. It also highlights the limited drama’s stellar cinematography, while teasing its action-packed aerial battle sequences. It is expected to premiere on January 26 on Apple TV+.

What to expect in Masters of the Air?

Based on Donald L. Miller’s 2007 book of the same name, Masters of the Air depicts the heroic actions of the men of the 100th Bombardment Group of the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. The ensemble cast includes Austin Butler as Major Gale Cleven, Barry Keoghan as Lt. Curtis Biddick, Callum Turner as Major John Egan, Anthony Boyle as Major Harry Crosby, Nate Mann as Major Robert Rosenthal, Raff Law as Sgt. Ken Lemmons, and more.

“It follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the ‘Bloody Hundredth’) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air,” reveals the synopsis. “Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich is at the heart of Masters of the Air. Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Ranging in location from the bucolic fields and villages of southeast England, to the harsh deprivations of a German prisoner-of-war camp, and depicting a unique and crucial time in world history, Masters of the Air is enormous in both scale and scope, and a genuine cinematic achievement.”

Masters of the Air is executive produced and directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga from a screenplay adapted by John Orloff, who is also producing. Executive producers are Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman, Grahan Yost, Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, and Steven Shareshian, with Dee Rees, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck serving as directors.

Earlier this year, Rolling Stone reported that Fukunaga had “taken a backseat” on production.

The first piece of Ahsoka Season 2 concept art has been revealed, previewing the next installment in Dave Filoni’s Disney+ Star Wars series.

On Twitter, the official Star Wars account posted an illustrated image of what appears to be the hand of the Sculpture of the Ones on Peridea — the planet that Ahsoka and Sabine Wren were stranded at the end of the first season. Two figures who appear to be Ahsoka and Sabine themselves are standing on the statue’s pointing index finger, with text above them that says, “The story continues.”

A new The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live trailer has been released for the upcoming spin-off of The Walking Dead led by Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. The trailer features the duo’s characters — Rick Grimes and Michonne — as they try to find one another amidst new and old threats. The show is set to premiere on AMC and AMC+ on Sunday, February 25.

“The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world,” reads the series’ synopsis. “Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead … And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? After years of speculation from fans, it has been confirmed that the Netflix Marvel television series are canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

On Disney+, there’s a “Timeline Order” for ever Marvel Studios production in the streamer’s Marvel section. This features each canon film and series in the chronological order that they take place in the MCU, with non-canon projects like Inhumans not being part of the list.

Now, with the release of Echo, the Netflix Marvel series have been added to the timeline, confirming their canon status. Daredevil and Jessica Jones take place between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Avengers: Age of Ultron, while Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Defenders are set between Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War. Finally, the Punisher series takes place after Spider-Man: Homecoming and before Doctor Strange.

When were the Netflix Marvel series released?

The first Marvel show made for Netflix was Daredevil, which had its first season debut on April 10, 2015, while its second and third seasons dropped in 2016 and 2018.

All of the Netflix Marvel shows — Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Like Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher — were released between 2015 and 2019, with the final installment — Jessica Jones Season 3 — dropping on June 14, 2019.

Alexander: The Making of a God’s trailer pulls back the curtain on the Netflix historical docudrama, which examines the legendary titular figure.

The project promises to reveal the “extraordinary life of Alexander the Great”, per the official synopsis. In particular, it will track his rise from an exiled young man and his growing obsession with defeating the Persian Emperor Darius. This led him to “conquer the known world in just under six years.”

The story will be told through dramatic scenes and expert academic insights in addition to ground-breaking archaeology and ongoing excavations at the archaeological site in Alexandria, Egypt led by Calliope Limneos-Papakosta.

When does Netflix’s Alexander premiere, and who stars in it?

The six-part docudrama debuts Wednesday, January 31.

Buck Braithwaite will play Alexander in the dramatized parts of the docudrama. Braithwaite recently had a role in the acclaimed thriller Fair Play and he’ll next appear in the Apple TV+ limited series Masters of the Air. Meanwhile, Mido Hamada will play King Darius. The actor is known for his roles in the series Emerald City and the film American Sniper.

It’s executive produced by Lucy van Beek for Tailfeather Productions (China Megatomb Revealed and Britain from Above) and Nick Catliff (Rebuilding The World Trade Centre and America Revealed). Tony Mitchell (The Bible, AD and Primeval) is the showrunner.

After the character of Abby was cast yesterday, The Last of Us Season 2 has had another actor join its cast — this time, as the character Jesse.

Variety has reported that Young Mazino, who recently starred in the Netflix limited series Beef, will play Jesse in The Last of Us Season 2. The character first appeared in the video game The Last of Us Part II, where he was voiced by Stephen Chang and modeled after Jasper Jeon. Jesse is a friend and ally to Ellie, Dina, and the rest of the people at the Jackson settlement and plays a large role in the sequel.

“Young is one of those rare actors who is immediately undeniable the moment you see him,” series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann stated. “We’re so lucky to have him, and we can’t wait for the audience to see Young shine in our show.”

The Last of Us currently stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. Season 2 is expected to be based on Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game sequel The Last of Us Part II, which will feature a significant time jump introducing a now grown-up Ellie.

Season 1 also featured Nico Parker, Anna Torv, Melanie Lynskey, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, and Storm Reid. It also included guest-star appearances from the original video game’s actors Jeffrey Pierce, Merle Dandridge, Troy Baker, and Ashley Johnson as new characters.

Who writes The Last of Us?

The series is executive produced and co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and original game writer Neil Druckmann, who is also serving as one of the directors. It is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. Executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog President Evan Wells, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

Barbenheimer’s dominance has spilled over into awards season. Nominations for the 30th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were announced Wednesday, with Barbie and Oppenheimer receiving four nominations a piece. On the television side, Succession dominated the field with five nominations.

Barbie received a nomination in the ensemble category along with nominations for Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and the film’s stunt work. Oppenheimer also received an ensemble nomination, with acting nods for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., and Emily Blunt.

The last season of Succession continues its strong showing this awards season with nominations for ensemble, Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, and Sarah Snook. Ted Lasso, The Bear, and The Last of Us were behind Succession with four nominations each.

The SAG Awards 2024 are set for February 24. For the first time, the ceremony will air live on Netflix at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT. The full list of nominees for the 2024 SAG Awards is listed below.
