The Shining mini-series heads to Blu-ray courtesy of Scream Factory in March. Mick Garris (Sleepwalkers, The Stand, Critters 2) directed the adaptation of Stephen King‘s story.

The Shining Mini-Series Details

After a much-publicized distaste for Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film, Stephen King provided the teleplay for this 1997 mini-series that stars Rebecca De Mornay and Steven Weber as Wendy and Jack Torrance.

As with the original story, Jack and Wendy Torrance along with their son Danny go to live and work in the Overlook Hotel during the off-season. Unfortunately, the hotel has many ghosts from its past that prey on the family. Danny’s struggles with his fledgling power known as Shining appears to only make the situation worse.

While it has its fans who enjoyed how close it sticks to the book in the early going, many criticized the mini-series for its overly sentimental ending and often cheap look. It was one of many Stephen King mini-series during the 1990s.

Kubrick’s film received something of a spiritual follow up in Mike Flanagan’s Doctor Sleep. That film balanced the best of both worlds as it kept the tone of King’s stories as we follow an adult Danny Torrance acting as mentor to Abra, a young girl with a powerful form of the Shining.

The Exorcist: Deceiver release date has been delayed as it has been taken off Universal Pictures’ upcoming release calendar.

The news comes alongside the departure of director David Gordon Green, who directed 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer and was set to helm the rebooted trilogy like he did for Halloween. Now, a search is on for a new director for the upcoming installment by Universal and Blumhouse. It was originally set to be released on April 18, 2025.

Green will stay busy, though, as he’s currently working on the movie Nutcrackers with Ben Stiller and on The Righteous Gemstones Season 4.

What was The Exorcist: Believer about?

“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding has raised their daughter, Angela on his own,” reads the synopsis. “But when Angela and her friend Katherine, disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.”

The Exorcist: Believer is the direct sequel to the original horror feature, which was adapted from William Peter Blatty’s novel. David Gordon Green directed from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and Peter Sattler. The film sees the return of Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn, who was joined by Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Raphael Sbarge, and Jennifer Nettles, with newcomers Lidya Jewett and Olivia Marcum.

The sequel was produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson, with Green, McBride, Couper Samuelson, and Stephanie Allain having executive produced. It was a co-production between Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Production.

The curse isn’t over yet. Paramount Pictures’ untitled sequel to Smile has rounded out its cast, with Kyle Gallner (The Passenger) returning. Poltergeist actress Rosemarie DeWitt also joins the cast in a still-undisclosed role, The Wrap reports. 

Gallner and DeWitt will be joining previously announced cast members Naomi Scott (Charlie’s Angels) and Lukas Gage (The White Lotus). Aside from Gallner reprising his Joel role, the roles of DeWitt, Scott, and Gage in the still-untitled sequel remain unclear.

The sequel to Parker Finn’s supernatural horror film is set to hit theaters on October 18, 2024, just in time for the Halloween countdown. Finn is returning to direct the second Smile feature and will also serve as the upcoming film’s writer. 

What is Smile about?

Inspired by Finn’s 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept, Smile — which grossed over $200 million worldwide — follows Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) and all of the bizarre and frightening occurrences she has been experiencing after one of her patients’ died by suicide in front of her, leading her to question her own sanity.

The official synopsis for Smile reads: “After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, Dr. Rose Cotter starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”

In addition to Cotter and Gallner, the first Smile film also starred Jessie T. Usher as Trevor, Robin Weigert as Dr. Madeline Northcott, Kal Penn as Dr. Morgan Desai, Rob Morgan as Robert Talley, Gillian Zinser as Holly, Judy Reyes as Victoria Muñoz, and Caitlin Stasey as Laura Weaver. Stasey also appeared in the 2020 short film the film is based on and played the lead character named Laura.

Tonight, it welcomes a businessman who has a unique connection to an extreme fantasy website on the dark web.

He soon becomes a witness to three stories of victims that found the same website, and now the Midnight Peepshow has found him. It will only be a matter of time before he is made to pay the ultimate price for dabbling in the dark side of his own desire.

Twenty-two years after 28 Days Later, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland are reteaming with plans for a second sequel titled 28 Years Later.

28 Years Later to Kick Off New Trilogy

As exclusively revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, the duo is due to shop the project around studios and streamers this week and the hope is to create a brand new trilogy of films rather than follow on from 28 Weeks Later, which they had little involvement with.

Boyle and Garland have long wished to continue the series, pitching a sequel that was titled 28 Months Later at one point. The pair have discussed it multiple times over the years and Boyle once said he had a ”properly good” idea for a sequel.

Boyle is attached to direct the first installment. Garland is down to write all three. The budget for each movie would be around $75 million

The duo would also produce, alongside original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, the former head of Fox Searchlight Pictures, the division of the now defunct Twentieth Century Fox that backed the British-made movie and its sequel. in the 2000s.

28 Days Later was an important horror film that helped steer away from the traditional idea of zombies in film and features rage-induced infected who can run at speed running riot in desolate Britain. It was a surprise success for Danny Boyle, and catapulted him, Garland, and star Cillian Murphy into a new level of stardom.

In 28 Days Later, Murphy starred as Jim, a London bicycle courier who awakes from a coma to discover a contagious virus caused the collapse of society. The ensemble features Naomie Harrie, Megan Burns, Christopher Eccleston, Noah Huntley, Stuart McQuarrie, and Brendan Gleeson.

Last year, Murphy said he’d love to do a 28 Days Later sequel. Murphy joked that the film would have to be called 28 Years Later because of the long gap between films.

It’s been slow going, but the killer sloth sorority movie Slotherhouse will finally be available to buy digitally next month.

Wanting to have a killer year, sorority sister Emily Young realizes she might just be the best option for her sorority. While beginning her campaign, she finds an adorable sloth that steals her heart and soon realizes she just might steal the hearts, and votes, of her sorority sisters.

But when bodies slowly begin to pile up in the Sigma Lambda Theta house, Emily and her sorority sisters realize the deaths are being caused by their new house mascot, the cuddly sloth Alpha. Will Emily and her sisters escape the house with their lives? Or is this death-sloth with 3 razor sharp claws too quick for them?

The film is directed by Matthew Goodhue (Woe) and stars Lisa Ambalanavar, Sydney Craven (York Witches Society), and Stefan Kapičić (Colossus in Deadpool). 

In my review of Slotherhouse for ComingSoon, I wrote that Slotherhouse is a touch tamer than I expected of the slasher, and I’d surely be forgiven if I forgot every human character seconds after writing this review. I could also end up jumbling the underlying sorority plot up with countless others, but what matters most is that Slotherhouse is the right kind of stupid. A knowing stupidity that transcends logic and becomes acceptably messy fun.

Slotherhouse is currently streaming on Hulu in the US and Paramount Plus in the UK.

Dark Sky Films has revealed the trailer for its upcoming horror movie Departing Seniors, which mixes the teen slasher with elements of Final Destination and The Dead Zone.

The story of Departing Seniors concerns high school student Javier doesn’t exactly fit in with the popular kids as a queer Mexican-American. But he might be the only one who can save them.

After an act of bullying sends Javier to the hospital, he begins experiencing visions that foresee glimpses of shocking murders at his school right before they happen. Now, in between navigating the social hierarchies and prejudices of clique culture, Javier (Ignacio Diaz-Silverio) and his best friend Bianca (Ireon Roach) must try to unmask a serial killer before he strikes again.

Fargo and The White Lotus actor Lukas Gage has signed on to Smile 2, the follow-up to the surprise 2022 horror hit from Paramount.

Variety had the exclusive on the latest casting for the supernatural horror sequel.

Gage has just played a recurring role in season 5 of Fargo, and has also had standout stints on shows such as Euphoria, You, and Love, Victor. He’s also set to feature in Jake Gyllenhaal’s upcoming Road House remake. He recently starred opposite Zachary Quinto in the comedy movie Down Low.

The story of Smile concerns Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon – Mare of Easttown), who starts experiencing frightening occurrences that she can’t explain after witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her life, Rose must confront her troubling past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.

Smile was the feature-length directorial debut of Parker Finn. It starred Kyle Gallner (Scream, Jennifer’s Body), Caitlin Stasey (All Cheerleaders Must Die), Kal Penn (Supeman Returns), and Judy Reyes (Birth/Rebirth).

The first film had initially been meant for the Paramount Plus streaming service, but Paramount switched up to a theatrical release and saw the movie pull in an impressive $217 million at the box office.

Smile 2 will see Parker Finn return to direct and recently added Aladdin star Naomi Scott to the cast.

Smile 2 is set to hit theaters on October 18, 2024.

Kino Lorber is putting four 1940s horror movies from Republic Pictures into a Republic Pictures Horror Collection Blu-ray.

Republic Pictures existed between 1935 and 1967 and created almost a thousand movies in that time. These films come during its ”poverty row” era when it mostly made B-movies and serials. The studio turned its focus to television in 1958 before being bought out in 1967 by CBS.

Lady and the Monster (1944) Erich von Stroheim, Vera Ralston & Richard Arlen: A millionaire’s brain is preserved after his death by a scientist and his two assistants, only to create a telepathic monster.

The Phantom Speaks (1945) Richard Arlen: The spirit of an executed murderer enters the body of a physician, and forces him to do its bidding–namely, murder.

The Catman of Paris (1946) Lenore Aubert & Adele Mara: When author Charles Regnier (Carl Esmond) returns to Paris with a best-selling book that criticizes the government, he’s tormented by frequent blackouts. After a mysterious cat-like creature slaughters people close to him, Charles is suspected of murder. The Republic Pictures Horror Collection Blu-ray is listed as coming soon for now and is a one-off collection as it stands, but Kino Lorber hasn’t ruled out more in future.

High school can be tough for many teenagers, but for Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz), it’s especially hellish. A shy and awkward teen being raised by a religious zealot (Julianne Moore), Carrie is frequently the target of bullies. But Carrie has a secret talent: She can make things move with her mind. One fateful night, an especially cruel prank at her senior prom pushes her over the edge, and Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers on all who get in her way.

The film is directed by Kimberly Peirce, who made her name with her 1999 debut Boys Don’t Cry. Carrie stars Ansel Elgort, Kimberly Peirce, Chloë Grace Moretz, Judy Greer, and Julianne Moore. It’s a fresh take on Stephen King‘s hit 50-year-old story, which was previously adapted in rather iconic fashion by Brian De Palma in 1976, and ever so slightly less so by David Carson in 2002.

There’s allegedly a fourth version of the story in the works, with Hunter Schafer reportedly in line for the title role.

The Carrie remake collector’s edition 4K UHD release arrives on March 19, 2024. Arrow is also selling a 4K collector’s edition of Brian De Palma’s Carrie on January 22, 2024.

We’ve all had horrible neighbors at some point. Most of us don’t accidentally kill them, though, no matter how loud the music gets. Shudder’s new horror-comedy has a lot going on beneath the boisterous characters, sick tunes, and gross effects, but not everything about Destroy All Neighbors harmonizes well together.

Sound engineer William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues) has a lot going on in his life outside of the day job he hates. He’s trying to finish an album, not sabotage his relationship with a successful lawyer, and deal with some deep personal issues. All the while, he’s determined to single-handedly make everyone understand what progressive rock truly is.

Life becomes less glam, however, when a new neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter) moves in next door and begins making too much noise. In what could have been a silly argument, the new annoying tenant winds up dead, and it looks like William’s fault. But that’s just the beginning — and some neighbors simply don’t know when to die.

There are a few parts of the film I truly enjoy, and the intro sequence is one of them. These opening credits have a classic feel horror feel, retro ‘80s, but specifically to the films that were capturing the essence of all those ‘50s creature features they grew up with. The title splatter itself instantly reminded me of Zombies Ate My Neighbors, which helped set an excellent mood in front of a grotesque and intriguing tunnel of innards.

I’ve heard this genre referred to as splatter-comedy, but it’s less relentless gore and more like Nickelodeon-style gross-out for adults. There are a lot of make-up effects and bodily fluids here that range from slightly twisted to moderately cheesy. Most of these are accompanied by era-appropriate lighting, and remind me of Freddy Krueger’s antics in his later movies.

The writing here kept me interested at first. I was dying myself (of laughter) during the entire sequence where the main character figures out how to dispose of a body from YouTube tutorials. Many of the scenes are enjoyable, silly, and the dialogue is rarely boring. The main couple shares an electric flirtatious chemistry, while some ridiculous lines stuck with me long after the credits.

Comedy and characters sell the film. There are some absolutely funny moments and even the absurd bits feel somewhat genuine, probably because of that chemistry I already mentioned between many of the actors. It’s always cool seeing Thomas Lennon and Kumail Nanjiani in smaller roles, almost everyone is delivering something enjoyable whenever they’re on screen in this movie. I especially thought Kiran Deol did a fantastic job in her role as Emily. The two lead actors are also listed as producers for Destroy All Neighbors, so maybe that hands-on approach helped in these scenes.

The main attraction for many here will be Alex Winter as Vlad — the over-the-top, music-loving, slightly gross neighbor with a bad temper. He’s like a mythical Romanian nomad who thrives off of EDM. But when he becomes Vlad the Impaled, he could be Willy’s best hope of finishing his album — or his biggest roadblock yet. His accent, make-up, and mumbling can make him hard to hear sometimes, however. Overall, though, Vlad is simultaneously the best and most annoying character out of the ensemble.

Destroy All Neighbors has a wonderful premise, but like some of those themed albums William mentions, it goes off the rails a tad. There aren’t too many obnoxiously long solos, however, as the movie is only 85 minutes and knows when to hold the encore (there are no post-credit scenes or sequel teases). I did want more with these characters, watching them try to help William when he couldn’t get out of his own way, just seeing the disaster unfold, I loved the laughs I found in the sicker moments.

I’d recommend Destroy All Neighbors only to certain people. The film keeps trying to tell us that prog-rock isn’t for everyone, and neither is this. But if you can jam out to Brain Salad Surgery and dig a good gore effect, you’re in for a treat.

Score: 7/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 7 equates to “Good.” A successful piece of entertainment that is worth checking out, but it may not appeal to everyone.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is definitely in the works, according to the star of the first movie, Josh Hutcherson.

Speaking to Variety, former Hunger Games star Hutcherson confirmed the sequel was a go, but it’s still early days of production, and much is still a mystery to him.

“I know they’re in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible,” said Hutcherson, who is currently promoting Jason Statham action movie The Beekeeper. He went on to express how excited he was to return to that world and deliver for the fans after being surprised by the reaction to it.

“We hoped it would connect with audiences, but I don’t think that anybody, even on our side of things, expected it to really connect the way that it did. I’m dying to get back on set. Emma Tammi, our director, was fantastic, and it was such a fun world to play in. I’m excited to see what they are doing next.”

Blumhouse producer Ryan Turek last week said a sequel wasn’t officially greenlit yet, even after reports came out that the follow-up to the hit video game adaptation was set to get a Spring 2024 shoot with a quick turnover for a Halloween theatrical release. That could still be the case once the green light is given.

Hutcherson also shared that Hunger Games co-star Jennifer Lawrence texted him to congratulate him on Five Nights at Freddy’s success.

“Jen texted me when “Freddy’s’ came out,” Hutcherson recalled. “She was like, ‘My movie’s #1 on Netflix, and yours is #1 at the box office! Let’s go!’ I was like, ‘I love you!’”

Five Nights at Freddy’s came out October 27, 2023, and it follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

Five Nights at Freddy’s was directed and co-written by Emma Tammi, and stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Piper Rubio, Elizabeth Lail, and Matthew Lillard (Scream).

The Holdovers star Paul Giamatti expressed an interest in doing more horror in future, and revealed his favorite horror movie.

Speaking to Variety on the red carpet for the Golden Globes, Giamatti was asked if there was a genre he’d still like to do more of having spanned multiple genres over his career. His answer was emphatically, ”Horror. I love horror”.

The interviewer seemed taken aback by his enthusiasm for the genre, but pressed on and asked what Giamatti’s favorite horror movie was, and Giamatti responded swiftly and confidently with ”The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”.

Once again, the interviewer showed some disbelief, and asked if Giamatti would be playing the killer in a hypothetical Texas Chain Saw movie, to which he responded that he didn’t think he could be the killer in that specifically, but would be keen to get back into the genre in general.

I did instantly think, ”Was Paul Giamatti in a horror movie before?” and he was in the horror comedy John Dies at the End by Phantasm and Bubba Ho-Tep director Don Coscarelli, as well as the 2026 sci-fi horror The Congress. So, it’s not a particularly prominent genre in Giamatti’s career.

Given how swiftly he responded to those questions, perhaps Giamatti already has something cooking in the horror genre.

Saltburn and Priscilla star Jacob Elordi has joined the cast of Guillermo Del Toro‘s Frankenstein movie for Netflix, replacing Andrew Garfield as the monster.

As with some other projects in the pipeline that have lost major cast members, Garfield has had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts caused by studios dragging their feet over fair pay for writers and actors, which created a lengthy strike in 2023.

Elordi, hot off the aforementioned films by Emerald Fennel and Sofia Coppola, will join Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front) as a newcomer to the cast.

Del Toro has dreamed of making a Frankenstein movie ”for 50 years” ever since he saw the 1931 James Whale film adaptation, and feels now is the right time to realize his version of the story that sees an obsessive doctor create a living creature from dead body parts.

Frankenstein will also star Oscar Isaac (Dune) as the Doctor, with Mia Goth (Infinity Pool), Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds), Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher), David Bradley (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth) also involved.

Gullermo Del Toro has a longstanding relationship with Netflix that has seen him create the likes of his stop-motion Pinnochio film, anthology horror show The Cabinet of Curiosities, and the animated series Trollhunters.

There’s no set release date for Frankenstein. Filming is due to start in February, but with the strikes and now having to recast the monster role, it’s likely suffered a bit of a setback.

There’s a problem in the Blumhouse… erm, house.

While their batting average is still respectable, the studio has begun to strain against audience tastes and expectations. Same-y films about a central group of characters where a weird, thinly obfuscated thing happens to them before a strong core shock… how many of their pictures can be summarized as such? It’s frustrating to see the studio behind greats like Get Out and M3GAN struggle at the box office and with critics.

Yet the hits just keep on coming — or don’t, in this case. Get ready for a dunk into ice cold mediocrity.

Night Swim is a bland entry into the Blumhouse catalogue centered on a haunted swimming pool set on destroying a young family. Bryce McGuire adapts his short (also called “Night Swim”) into his directorial feature debut. The film follows the Waller family: former pro-baseball player Ray (Wyatt Russell), forced to retire early due to multiple sclerosis; his wife Eve (Kerry Condon); and their children Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle) and Elliot (Gavin Warren). With Ray forced out of the league (temporarily, he hopes), the family is looking to buy a house and put down roots. Their chosen house happens to have a disused swimming pool in the yard. The kids are excited for a pool, and Ray will use it for physical therapy. Everyone is happy.

Until they have been in the house for a bit, and everyone starts seeing things in and around the pool. Eve takes a swim and thinks she sees Ray standing at the side of the pool, but he’s in bed. Next, Elliot is swimming when a girl named Rebecca tries to lure him into a crevice in the pool. (The audience knows her as the previous victim of the pool, from 1992 — her demise is in the opening scene.) Finally, while having a boy over while her parents are out, Izzy is nearly drowned by someone or something. Meanwhile, the pool seems to have a healing effect on Ray.

Night Swim is horror without any glaring flaws, but with no distinct personality. The script follows every single beat that a horror movie should hit. The jumps appear exactly where they should. This is the consequence of Blumhouse churning out same-y cookie cutter horror at an alarmingly higher frequency. Eventually, the film starts to become a delivery device for the expected shock — like the Poverty Row cheapies of the ’30s and ’40s.

Like many of those — low-rent whodunnits and noirs — the central threat here isn’t even all that interesting. Sometimes it’s a personified entity, which is when the creature is most impressive. But it also appears as a monster of its own, at which point it just feels like lazy character design. It’s another vague scare to keep you occupied for an hour or two, then move on.

You’d hope the cast could save it, but no, Night Swim’s generic blandness translates to the performances. The family dynamic feels like a syrup-dipped Hallmark card, with little to no tangible strife. No one mentions the haunted swimming pool until everyone has experienced it, so there is no one being called “crazy.” Even the two kids barely argued with one another. No tension — flaccid, weak, and unbelievable to the umpteenth degree.

I get the feeling that Blumhouse is trying to use the opening week of January to reclaim the success they saw with last year’s M3GAN (which opened the first weekend of 2023). M3GAN was weird and funny (on purpose), not to mention pathos for days and had characters with real problems. Plus, it had the dancing doll and her funky murder strut. Night Swim has some… black oil? A pool? Yeah, that’s not going to trend with the TikTok kiddies.

Blumhouse is a studio that — at this point — feels unclear in their aim. Night Swim is the precise problem of their output personified. It’s effective enough, sure, and younger viewers in the audience may find it somewhat thrilling. But overall, it’s a predictable, lukewarm kiddie pool that hits all the expected notes and none of the interesting ones. If Blumhouse wants to remain a relevant name in horror, they ought to funnel more resources into risky, thoughtful arthouse horror and not this shock-of-the-week faff.
